Michaela Shiffrin has been the best skater in the world for many years and has also won Olympic titles in previous games: in 2014 in slalom, and in 2018 in giant slalom.
But Beijing clearly does not fit the American star. In her favorite part she was always falling out after a few gates. Winning the set can pay off a lot. With her strong landing performance (not the best part of hers) she pressed herself into a dream position.
Shiffrin only had to finish in the slalom, which is her best event. But she again took a lot of the fork and came out a third time. So Shiffrin has no individual medal, she only has a (aquatic) chance in the national teams’ parallel slalom.
So we had another Swiss fight for gold. Wendy Holdner set first, but defending champion Michelle Gisin slipped by more than a second.
Switzerland concludes the individual tournament with 5 titles, for 5 different skaters (Feuz, Odermatt, Sutter, Gut-Behrami and Gisin). Holdner must be satisfied with the silver and bronze medals, but can take comfort in the fact that with 5 Olympic medals she now equals her compatriot Phryne Schneider as the most successful Swiss skater.
