NASA is planning two new missions to the neighboring planet Venus. ‘DaVinci+’ and ‘Veritas’ will blast off from Earth between 2028 and 2030 to rediscover the second planet further from the Sun.
On Wednesday, NASA said it is allocating $500 million for each mission. Among other things, the space agency wants to understand how Venus has become a “hell-like world” while the planet has “many characteristics similar to ours”.
DaVinci+ actually aims to investigate the composition of Venus’s atmosphere and create high-resolution images of “unique geological features”. This will be the first US mission to the atmosphere of Venus since 1978. With “Veritas”, NASA wants to map the surface of the planet in particular.
“We are reviving our planetary science program with extensive exploration of a world that NASA has not visited in more than 30 years,” said Thomas Zurbuchen of NASA. He talks about “a new decade for Venus to understand how an Earth-like planet could become a greenhouse.”
