Back to 2018: Wout van Aert terminated his contract early with Sniper Cycling, the team for which Nick Nuwens was sporting director. This enabled Van Aert to switch to Jumbo-Visma, who is still his employer.
But Wout van Aert’s breach of contract was challenged by Sniper Cycling and Nick Nuyens. Nuyens has demanded €1.1 million from Van Aert and additional compensation for damages caused to him by loss of bail due to breach of contract.
In November 2019, Nuyens was sentenced by the Mechelen Labor Court, which accepted the urgent reasons for Van Aert’s breach of contract. Nuyens disagreed with this ruling and appealed.
Today it was found in the right by the Labor Court in Antwerp. The court ruled that the termination of the employment contract was not justified on urgent grounds and that Van Art must pay compensation to the previous employer. This amount was set at 662,000 euros. Van Aert also has to pay legal costs.
Van Aert’s lawyer doubts that legal action will follow: “Knowing Wout van Aert, we won’t leave it at that. This feels unfair. There is a very good chance we will go to cassation,” replies Walter van Stenbruge.
