The U.S. House of Representatives on Wednesday passed a bill to make June 19 a public holiday, a day to commemorate the abolition of slavery.
Leaders of both parties rallied behind the plan. The text was therefore adopted by a clear majority of 14 to 415 votes. Fourteen votes against came from Republican representatives.

The text was already passed unanimously by the Senate on Tuesday. President Joe Biden has not yet approved, but he is no doubt supportive of the plan.
Junettin, also known as Memorial Day, commemorates the release of the last slaves in the United States on June 19, 1865, in Calveston, Texas.
In the same state, this day has been recognized as a holiday since 1980, and following Texas, the Junetin is already recognized in most states. The call to turn this into a national holiday came in the wake of Black Lives Matter struggles against racism and excessive police brutality.
If Biden approves the bill, Junetin will be the 11th national holiday in the United States.
