foreign footballSamuel Kalou, a former AA Gent teammate and now at Bordeaux, suddenly collapsed on the field last night. The 23-year-old Nigerian fell in the sixth minute of the match against Marseille while standing in the wall with a free kick. He quickly got up again, and came between the lines, but was replaced anyway. There was a moment of silence in the Velodrome Stadium. Bordeaux coach Vladimir Petkovic has announced that Kalou is fine.
The team’s medical team ran to Marseille on the hot evening using a stretcher, while Kalou was protected by the Bordeaux and Marseille players. The Nigerian regained his senses and was able to get up on his own. With the help of doctors, he came out of the field with an ice pack on his head. Kalou came back for a while, but was replaced after a few minutes.
The spectators at the Velodrome became silent for a moment, and the incident brought back memories of Christian Eriksen’s collapse in the European Championship match against Finland after suffering a heart attack. The Dane has been revived and is fine.
shock
Bordeaux coach Vladimir Petkovic said after the match that Kalou was doing well. “The match result (2-2, editor) is in the background. Fortunately, Samuel is fine. We have switched as a precaution, because health is much more important than football.” Remy Auden replaced Kalou. “We all got goosebumps,” Odin said. “It was a huge shock. For us, but also for the fans. Of course we thought of Eriksen. We are all happy that he ended well for Kalou.”
