A burning ship containing 1,100 Porsches and 189 Bentleys sank

The cargo ship that caught fire about two weeks ago sank off the coast of the Azores. That reports the Portuguese Navy. On board were 4,000 new cars from the Volkswagen Group.

“The cargo ship Felicity Ice has sunk,” a Navy press release said. The ship became unstable and sank during the rescue operation, which began on February 24.

The batteries on board the motor ship are still burning

The ship was on its way from Germany to the United States. The 22 crew members were able to evacuate them from the burning ship. It is said that the fire was caused by lithium batteries in electric cars on board, but this information has not yet been confirmed.

The ship sank in a place where the ocean depth is 3000 meters. A small oil spot forms on the surface of the water. It will be cleaned by a special cleaning vessel of the Portuguese Navy.

The ship transported 1100 Porsche and 189 Bentley. The specialist company Russell Group, which conducts risk assessments, had previously calculated that the cargo ship fire could cost the Volkswagen Group 137 million euros. Damage will be insured.

US merchants and customers have already been informed that their vehicle was on board.
