A detainee escaped from Ghent prison. This confirms prisons. An extensive search has been underway near Nieuwe Wandeling since 11 am. This will continue in the wider region. Nothing is known about the identity of the escaped prisoner, nor about how he managed to escape. “The exact circumstances in which this could occur are currently under investigation,” she said in a statement.

Nieuwelopen Street in Ghent was temporarily closed around 11:30am. Prison staff informed the police that no detainee could be found. Then a large-scale police force and a helicopter were deployed. Officers were present in all the streets around the prison. The entire neighborhood was closed off, and no one was allowed in or out. Together with the guards, the inspection was carried out inside the prison site.
Since then the perimeter of the area has been raised. The attorney general is not currently providing any information about who it will be. However, the police in Ghent will continue their searches in a few more places, as we know immediately.
