More than 200 people have left their homes and moved to the evacuation center. Many have lost everything they owned. Paul McVeigh, mayor of Western Dow, a large but very sparsely populated area, said it was not yet clear how many homes were damaged. Officially, there are five houses, but experience shows that in such a serious fire the number will increase, it is said.
Many of the firefighters appear to still be exhausted. Conditions are very difficult because the wind is constantly changing and the flames can reach 15 metres. Smaller settlements such as Tara, Kogan, Melmiran and Wiyambila were the most affected. In recent days, citizens were ordered to move to a safer place. Queensland Fire and Emergency Services added it was not safe for them to return.
There are currently 53 wildfires in the northeastern state. With temperatures and wind speeds expected to rise in the coming days, the authorities expect the current situation to continue. Just over the weekend meteorologists are predicting cooler temperatures and then there could be rain as well.
