A large number of children and infants in the Netherlands suffer from acute otitis media, or inflammation of the middle ear, or inflammation of the eardrum. Many children suffer from this, especially in Gelderland-Suid. Reported by de Gelderlander.
Acute ear infections usually occur after a cold or flu, but never before have so many children suffered from them as now. There are no figures on how many children had ear infections before 2020. However, there are a number of striking issues during the current influenza epidemic: Not only are the number of children with lung infections twice as many as last year, infants and children. Young children have more other respiratory infections, and there are also many ear infections.
Paracetamol is often the only necessary medication
Ear infections may also be a result of the circulating RS virus. Fortunately, infections are easy to treat and antibiotics are often not necessary. About 80 percent of children ages 2 and older experience their worst complaints after two to three days. Only if complaints persist for several days and high fever persists, antibiotics are prescribed.
