Defending champions Club Brugge played out a 0-0 draw last weekend with city rivals Cercle Brugge. Ten minutes before the end of the match, all the club’s fans held their breath.
Cercle Brugge scored from a counterattack, but it was offside. Referee Jonathan Lardot was called to the screen and decided to disallow the goal.
According to Alexander Bookout, there is an important thing to consider during this stage. Leonardo da Silva Lopez was offside and interfered in the first half. “The question is whether he will go to the game or not,” Bookout says.
“A few years ago, there was a rule in the UEFA guidelines that eventually disappeared. A player is annoying if he is less than two meters away,” continues Bookout.
“Even though this rule no longer exists, it is still useful sometimes. Here he will play the ball. If you take De Kuiper out of the picture, you see that there are two Circle players who will play the ball. The final decision is the correct one.”
