“European federations consider leaving FIFA in dispute over the World Cup every two years” | foreign football

world Cup of footballSeveral European football federations are considering canceling their membership in FIFA, as the final form of protest against plans to organize the World Cup every two years.

Germany’s DPA bases its claim on sources talking about “more than a dozen federations” that would not rule out such a drastic measure if FIFA pushes through its plans to host the World Cup every two years from 2026.

UEFA and CONMEBOL South America have been vocal against the plans being developed by FIFA in a study group led by Arsene Wenger from the start. The IOC also showed little enthusiasm, because the World Cup every two years would hurt other sports.

Today, the FIFA Board of Directors is organizing a meeting where the topic is on the agenda. FIFA President Gianni Infantino reportedly met with representatives of European associations yesterday to discuss the calendar reform scheduled for 2024.

According to the statute, FIFA members can leave the organization at the end of the calendar year. They should announce it six months in advance. These countries may continue to participate in UEFA tournaments, but no longer in FIFA competitions such as the World Cup.
