Road cyclists are spending their winter break, but that doesn’t mean they’re sitting still. Remco Evenepoel and Matthew van der Poel are logging miles together in sunny Spain these days, while Wout van Aert braves the Belgian cold.
After a short break, the peloton returned to their bikes en masse. Not for racing, of course, but to lay a broad foundation for 2024 during the winter months, which means: cycling a lot and for a long time. So you can cover kilometers without getting into the red zone.
This is of course more fun when the weather is nice, which is why Remco Evenepoel and Matthew van der Poel can currently be found in Spain. Today they went out together near Calpe for a four hour ride. There were also Freddie Ovett – a regular training friend of the two – and Sippy Rosemes – a friend of Evenepoel and a teammate of Van der Poel.
But not everyone goes to Spain to enjoy the sun. Wout van Aert is currently training in Belgium. Today, he cycled 146.7 kilometers in near-freezing temperatures, enough for 4.5 hours on the bike. Only after he started walking 10 km in the morning.
While Evenpoel still has to wait a few months before he can wear the shirt number again, Van Aert and Van der Poel will return to competition next month, albeit on the field. Van Aart starts on December 9 in Essen, and Van der Poel on December 22 in Mall.
