First look at Gemini in Google Messages

Soon you won't be able to buy a smartphone without AI functionality somewhere. Google announced last month that it would also be bringing the Gemini chatbot to its messaging app on smartphones. This feature is currently in beta, but it seems to be moving slowly.

One of the most striking things is that Gemini instantly supports extensions in messages. This means the chatbot can instantly retrieve relevant information from Google platforms like Flights, Gmail, and Maps.

Anyone who mostly programs from their Android phone can ask the Gemini chatbot for help. The chat system can instantly produce scripts from Google messages. Another symbol that Gemini understands immediately is emojis. When you send a smiley to a chatbot, it will respond instantly.

The Gemini photo generator will also be moved to the Messages app. This allows you to ask to create an image of something. After a few moments you will see the answer immediately. What is not possible is uploading photos to Gemini via Google Messages: then the system flatly says that it cannot process these files.

RCS

This whole story comes with a major caveat: Gemini in Google Messages is not yet available in Europe. A separate Gemini app isn't yet available in Europe, but it's on its way. It seems likely that Google will also integrate Gemini into the Messages app here. This way, Google wants to make sure that more people send RCS messages. In other words, Gemini should make Google Chat more attractive than other apps, like Telegram and WhatsApp.

Your conversations with Gemini also pass through RCS. Unlike conversations with real people, chat encryption disappears. This makes sense in itself: otherwise Google would not be able to use usage data to improve the service.

It is not known when Gemini will also be available on European Android mobile phones. Google itself doesn't say anything about exactly how this happens, though European privacy legislation may have something to do with it. However, Google itself has an interest in Gemini also appearing on smartphones here. So you can safely assume that a lot of work is being done on the European launch of the chatbot.
