Not only did Fernando Alonso help his teammate Esteban Ocon, but also Max Verstappen. And the Spaniard himself knows that well after the race.
Alonso was fighting for laps with Lewis Hamilton who failed to overtake the Alps in a much faster Mercedes. In the end, this worked, but Hamilton didn’t have enough time to fight for the win. It was Alonso’s teammate, Esteban Ocon, who kicked off with his first race win.
Alonso fought hard
“I did my best”Alonso says in front of a camera Ziggo Sports. “It was hard to keep Hamilton behind me. It was important to win the race, because Hamilton was so fast. It was also important to Max!”
Alonso worked hard to keep Hamilton behind, but he wanted to be fair: “I tried to give him space, but not too much space. Otherwise, he would have passed.”, explains in Sky Sports F1.
