Pictures have emerged of the world's second rarest primate. This concerns Nomascus nasutus, which was thought to be extinct until 2002. There are now said to be around 135 specimens left in the wild.

The footage shows two older gibbons playing with a younger one. The latter falls suddenly. The trio was spotted by a drone in a forest near the Vietnamese-Chinese border. These are three male specimens of Nomascus nasutus, because they have black fur. Females have brown fur.
The discovery of the “new” gibbon is good news, because the breed is threatened with extinction due to habitat loss. The trees in which the primates live are used as firewood.
