look. Djokovic wins 40th (!) Masters 1000 tournament
Novak Djokovic (ATP 1) won the final in two sets against Grigor Dimitrov (ATP 17). Djokovic broke his Bulgarian opponent’s serve 3-3 in the first set. In the second set, the Serbian player stole his opponent’s serve at 2-2, but he did so again at 5-3. The match lasted one hour and 39 minutes.
Dimitrov clearly expected more from the final. Because after the game he started crying while wearing a towel on the bench. Djokovic was giving an on-court interview at the time. Until he saw his opponent’s tears. Djokovic interrupted the interview and approached Dimitrov to hug him.
And then he also said: “I’m sorry that’s the result, Gregor.” It’s never easy to lose a final. I want to encourage you to stay strong. And continue. This week, as well as in recent months, you gave the best performance of your football career. Congratulations to your team and family. We have a past together. We both belong to the over 30s club. It is a pleasure to share the job with you.”
This is Djokovic’s seventh overall victory in Paris. It was already the best in the French capital in 2009, 2013, 2014, 2015, 2019 and 2021. He now has 97 ATP titles, including 40 Masters 1000 tournaments, to his name.
Dimitrov won eight ATP tournaments in his career. The last overall win dates back to 2017. He then defeated David Goffin in the final of the ATP Finals.
