Minutes before former cop Derek Chauvin was convicted of killing George Floyd, police in Columbus, Ohio shot and killed a 16-year-old black girl. The mayor of Columbus confirmed that the officers had received a report on a person armed with a knife. “One young woman was tragically killed,” said Andrew Ginter.
Officers responded to an emergency call, saying a suspect had attempted to stab a person with a knife. That suspect was 16-year-old Makiya Bryant, her aunt said in a local newspaper, who was going to drop the knife moments before she was shot by the police.
The agents involved were wearing body cameras. The Ohio Bureau of Judicial Investigation (BCI) has launched an investigation. “I ask the citizens to keep the peace and let the BCI gather the facts,” the mayor said on Twitter.
The newspaper reported that a crowd of protesters gathered in the southeast of the city, where the shooting incident occurred. This was just minutes before a Minneapolis judge announced that a jury had found former white cop Derek Chauvin guilty of the murder of black George Floyd.
