Phone calls made with AI-generated voices are now illegal in the US

Phone calls using AI-generated voices are now banned in the US. The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) regulates such conversations.

The US government has pointed to a sharp increase in the number of so-called ‘robocalls’: unwanted phone calls in which AI-generated voices are used, for example, to impersonate celebrities, extort money from vulnerable family members or misinform voters.

New tools

The investigative authorities in the country have long been able to take action against the harmful effects of fraud. But now authorities are also being given resources to deal with questionable robocalls. “We are issuing a clear warning to the scammers behind these calls,” FCC Chair Jessica Rosenworcel said. “The Attorney General now has new tools to combat these scams and better protect the public from fraud and misinformation.”

The new rules are part of the revised Telephone Consumer Protection Act (TCPA). This law aims to deal with unwanted phone calls in the United States.
