Sustainability monitoring maps the performance of dairy farmers; “A space for new participants”

Dairy farmers interested in participating in the Brabant Dairy Farming Biodiversity Monitor (BBM) received an online explanation on Thursday evening about the initiative that provides insight into the sector’s performance in the field of sustainability and biodiversity. There are already 450 participating dairy farmers in Brabant and there is now space for 200 new participants.

The incentive scheme is implemented by BoerenNatuur Brabant, a partnership between three cooperatives in West, Central and East Brabant. Members are mostly farmers who apply agronomic nature and water management to their farms for a fee.

BoerenNatuur Brabant also provides dairy farmers with peace of mind within programs such as those for dairy farmers. “There is very little administrative hassle,” the organization says. “BBM is not just about biodiversity, it is a sustainability monitor that works with thirteen critical performance indicators (KPIs), such as permanent grassland, locally grown protein, CO2 emissions, soil nitrogen surplus, and on-farm nature. BBM works with This is called goal management, and it does not matter how you become more sustainable as a dairy farmer, as long as a certain performance is achieved.

Participants can participate for five years, the first period lasts for three years and can then be extended for another two years. Participating dairy farmers receive an annual contribution that increases as the company's sustainability score increases. “The annual compensation is a maximum of €5,000, which each participant can receive for five years. After five years, there is an additional (performance) bonus for young dairy farmers and dairy farmers in the incentive area,” says BoerenNatuur Brabant.
