Next week, the SPD, the Greens, and the FDP want to introduce their treaty of alliance. so called Traffic Lights Alliance (German for a traffic light, following the party colors red, yellow and green) has a comfortable majority in the German parliament, the Bundestag.
The centre-left SPD, the Greens and the FDP have been officially discussing forming a coalition since October. In order to reach a coalition agreement, major differences between the parties must be bridged. On Tuesday, however, all three parties’ general secretaries said could be resolved, in a state of government negotiations.
The FDP and SPD in particular have confirmed that many cases are progressing faster than previously thought. The Greens are also upbeat, even as criticism from their ranks for concessions on climate plans.
Olaf Schulz, the current Finance Minister and leader of the Social Democratic Party, will succeed Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU). She is no longer a candidate in the September elections.
