Former Belgian champion Tim Merler is back on the team bus after Scheldeprijs finished in the opposite direction of the course. Just then, a group of riders took off in 14th place.
Merler met a group of riders during their sprint race, including Arnaud De Lee and Fabio Jacobsen. When Merlier saw the group coming, he put his bike over the fence and quickly ran off. This way he was able to avoid collision.
The UCI commissioners fined Merlier 200 Swiss francs (196.48 euros) after the race for not following the instructions of the organizer or the commissioners.
“When I crossed the finish line again to drive into the team parking area, I honestly thought all the riders had arrived because I hadn’t stopped and there was only one group behind us,” Merlier said. “I didn’t want to put anyone in danger and I’m sorry if I did.”
