US pledges humanitarian aid to Afghanistan | Abroad

The United States has announced the first tranche of more than $ 300 million in development aid to Afghanistan (6 256 million). Earlier, the United Nations (UN) called on the United States to help the country, which is in dire straits.

USAID, a US emergency agency, underlined in a press release that US resources should be given priority over food, health care and protection against winter cold.

The Taliban returned to power last summer after the US military withdrew. The Afghan security apparatus soon collapsed. U.S. President Joe Biden, who has ordered the withdrawal, has been criticized for his decision to thwart the Taliban’s transfer of power.

On the edge of the abyss

In December, the United Nations Security Council adopted a resolution allowing one year of humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan. Afghanistan’s economy is on the verge of collapse. The resolution proposed by the United States was unanimously approved. Thus there is hope that the Taliban will not make a profit. The Taliban regime has not yet been recognized by the international community. A Taliban spokesman called the decision “a good development.”
