Wout van Aert is striking in the post-tour benchmark in his hometown of Herentals at 7.30pm. With Tim Merlier, Biniam Girmay, Mathieu van der Poel and Arnaud De Lie, there are still some great names on the starting list, but it’s all about Van Aert. Fans are asked to wear green clothes. On Monday, Van Aert will ride another benchmark at Rosendal.
Normally, Clásica San Sebastián was also on his Saturday program, but Van Aert has a cold. This race was added to his calendar in January, because Van Aert often looks good a week into the Tour. But now it has gone too deep. “We’ll see if this planning is smart or not,” said Meren Zeemann, sporting director of Jumbo Visma.
The belt will completely separate in August. After that, it was planned to prepare for the World Cup (25/09). Before Van Aert heads to Canada in September for GPs in Quebec (09/09) and Montreal (11/09), GP from Plouay (08/28) was also on his program. For Van der Paul, the break ended after he retired to the Tour. Training resumed this week. Towards the World Cup, he leads neither Canada nor the Vuelta (19/08-11/09).
