Walmart, Kroger, and Amazon Grocery Price Comparison: Which Retailer Offered the Best Value?

Walmart, Kroger, and Amazon Grocery Price Comparison: Which Retailer Offered the Best Value?

As grocery prices remain a major concern for American households, retailers continue competing to attract shoppers with discounts, loyalty programs, and seasonal promotions. After Walmart announced price reductions on more than 250 products for the summer, I compared a selection of those items against similar products at Kroger and Amazon to see which retailer offered the best overall value.

The results showed that while all three stores had competitive pricing in certain categories, one retailer ultimately delivered the lowest total grocery bill.

Walmart’s Summer Price Cuts Sparked the Comparison

Walmart recently announced rollbacks on hundreds of products, including groceries and household essentials. To test the impact of those discounts, I created a shopping list based on the specific items highlighted in Walmart’s announcement and compared prices at Walmart, Kroger, and Amazon.

The basket included ground beef, sweet corn, cherries, ice cream, potato chips, snack variety packs, disposable plates, and soft drinks.

Ground Beef Prices Were Nearly Identical

Walmart Edged Out the Competition

For a one-pound roll of 73% lean ground beef, Walmart offered the lowest price at $5.94 after a rollback from $6.94.

Kroger was only slightly higher at $5.99. Amazon did not offer the same one-pound package, but a larger three-pound option worked out to approximately $6.15 per pound.

The price differences were relatively small, making this one of the most competitive categories.

Sweet Corn Was Significantly Cheaper at Walmart

A Clear Win for Budget-Conscious Shoppers

Among all the products compared, sweet corn delivered one of Walmart’s biggest advantages.

Each ear cost just $0.25 at Walmart, compared with $0.40 at Kroger and $1.25 at Amazon.

Purchasing four ears of corn highlighted the substantial gap, especially compared with Amazon’s pricing.

Cherries Offered Strong Value at Walmart

Kroger and Amazon Tied for Second Place

Walmart’s advertised cherry promotion translated to roughly $2.50 per pound at the local store.

Kroger and Amazon both priced fresh red cherries at $2.99 per pound.

However, Kroger’s discount required a Kroger Plus Card, while Walmart’s lower price was available without a membership requirement.

Ice Cream Prices Were Surprisingly Competitive

Kroger Took First Place

Store-brand vanilla ice cream was affordable across all three retailers.

Walmart’s 48-ounce Great Value tub sold for $2.50 after a price reduction. Amazon’s equivalent Amazon Grocery ice cream cost $2.97.

Kroger delivered the lowest price at $1.99 during a promotional sale, making it the strongest value in this category.

Potato Chips Highlighted Kroger’s Deal Strategy

Temporary Discounts Beat Everyday Pricing

An 8-ounce bag of Lay’s Classic Potato Chips cost $2.50 at both Walmart and Amazon.

At Kroger, the same product could be purchased for as little as $1.99 with a loyalty card and digital coupon.

While Kroger offered the best price, the promotion was temporary and expired shortly after the comparison, illustrating how shoppers must closely track weekly deals to maximize savings.

Snack Variety Packs Were Closely Matched

Walmart Maintained a Small Advantage

Walmart priced the Frito-Lay Family Fun 18-count variety pack at $8.97 after a discount.

Kroger’s promotional price came in at $9.99, matching Amazon Fresh pricing.

Amazon shoppers without a qualifying Fresh order could face additional delivery costs, reducing the overall value.

Disposable Plates Favored Walmart

Bulk Purchases Delivered Better Savings

For a 200-count package of disposable plates, Walmart charged $8.97, or approximately four cents per plate.

Amazon’s comparable package cost $10.60, while Kroger’s closest option contained only 150 plates for $9.99.

For shoppers planning summer gatherings, cookouts, or family events, Walmart offered the strongest value in this category.

Kroger Won the Soda Battle

Promotional Offers Created Exceptional Savings

Walmart’s discounted 24-packs of Coca-Cola and Diet Pepsi worked out to about $0.42 per can.

Kroger’s regular pricing was significantly higher, but a “buy two, get three free” promotion dramatically lowered the effective cost to roughly $0.40 per can.

Amazon’s soda pricing was notably higher, ranging from approximately $0.66 to $0.70 per can.

This category demonstrated how Kroger’s rotating promotions can occasionally outperform Walmart’s everyday pricing.

Kroger’s Deals Require More Planning

One key difference between the retailers was how discounts were delivered.

Walmart’s rollback prices were broadly available and generally remain active for several weeks. Kroger’s lowest prices often depended on loyalty membership, digital coupons, and short-term weekly promotions.

For shoppers willing to monitor deals closely, Kroger can generate meaningful savings. However, missing a coupon or promotion can quickly increase the total cost of a shopping trip.

Amazon’s pricing also fluctuated regularly, making it less predictable than either Walmart or Kroger.

Final Grocery Totals: Walmart Finished First

After comparing all nine product categories, Walmart delivered the lowest overall total.

The Walmart cart came to $52.32.

Using available promotions and a Kroger loyalty card, the Kroger cart totaled $58.52. Amazon’s basket exceeded $70, placing it well behind the other two retailers.

Although Walmart benefited from selecting the products used in the comparison, the retailer still maintained a pricing advantage across multiple categories.

Conclusion

No single retailer offered the lowest price on every item. Kroger excelled with limited-time promotions, particularly on soda and ice cream, while Amazon provided convenience for Prime members but generally higher grocery costs.

Overall, Walmart delivered the most affordable basket and the most consistent pricing across the products compared. For shoppers seeking dependable everyday savings without relying on coupons or weekly promotions, Walmart emerged as the strongest option. However, consumers willing to monitor Kroger’s rotating deals may still find opportunities to match—or occasionally beat—Walmart on specific items throughout the summer.
