Target Turnaround Gains Momentum as Grocery Sales and Same-Day Delivery Jump

Target is showing stronger signs of progress in its turnaround effort, with the U.S. retailer reporting higher grocery sales, accelerating digital demand and better-than-expected second-quarter results. The performance offers an encouraging signal for CEO Michael Fiddelke as the big-box chain works to strengthen its competitive position across food, home, apparel and other key categories.

Target Comparable Sales Rise 2.7% in Second Quarter

Target reported a 2.7% increase in comparable sales for the quarter ended Aug. 1, surpassing the 2.5% growth expected by S&P Capital IQ.

Total revenue climbed 5.3% from a year earlier to $26.5 billion, also topping the $26.1 billion expected by analysts.

Digital operations were another bright spot. Comparable digital sales increased 8.7%, while Target’s same-day delivery business surged 25%, highlighting growing consumer demand for faster and more convenient shopping options.

Following the stronger quarter, Target raised its revenue and earnings outlook for the full year.

Fiddelke, who became CEO in February, pointed to the results as evidence that the company’s turnaround strategy is beginning to resonate with shoppers.

“It’s evidence guests are choosing Target more often,” Fiddelke said during a conference call with reporters.

Grocery Sales Become a Key Growth Driver

One of the most significant improvements came from Target’s food and beverage business, an important category as the company competes for budget-conscious U.S. households.

Food and beverage sales increased 7.2%, providing a boost in a segment where Target has previously faced challenges attracting consumers focused heavily on price.

Food Assortment and Store Presentation Get an Upgrade

Chief merchandising officer Cara Sylvester said customers have responded favorably to Target’s refreshed food selection, including wellness products, “global flavors” and “emerging brands.”

Fiddelke said the retailer has also improved how food is presented in stores and expanded its offerings. Beyond groceries, Target has made “major changes” to its home furnishings business while using partnerships with brands such as LoveShackFancy, Pokémon and Hollister to generate additional customer interest.

The strategy reflects Target’s effort to differentiate itself through a combination of everyday essentials and trend-focused merchandise while competing with Walmart and other major U.S. retailers.

Target Still Faces Challenges in Apparel and Home

Despite the improved results, Target executives acknowledged that parts of the business remain a work in progress.

Fiddelke said the company still has considerable room for improvement in apparel and home products. He described the home category as a “multi-year journey,” even after Target replaced or updated about 75% of its decorative accessories.

The challenge will be maintaining recent sales momentum while navigating intense retail competition, promotional activity and price-sensitive consumer behavior.

Analysts Question Whether Sales Momentum Can Last

Bank of America analyst Christopher Nardone highlighted those concerns in a recent research note.

Target has demonstrated “an impressive improvement in sales under new leadership, but we remain wary,” Nardone wrote, pointing in part to uncertainty surrounding the “sustainability of strong comp trends from here.”

He also warned of the possibility that “the apparel/home turn takes longer than expected due to competition and potential promo pressure in the industry.”

In groceries, Target could face another challenge if a “competitive pricing environment in food/beverage tempers share gains,” Nardone added.

Back-to-School Sales and Beauty Expansion in Focus

Target is now turning its attention to the important back-to-school and back-to-college shopping season, when American families typically spend heavily on school supplies, clothing, electronics and dorm essentials.

Fiddelke said the retailer is “really encouraged by what we see so far in the back-to-school and back-to-college seasons.”

Price is central to Target’s strategy. According to Fiddelke, 95% of the company’s school supplies are priced at or below last year’s levels, an approach aimed at appealing to households that remain attentive to everyday expenses.

Target Beauty Studio Coming to More Than 600 Stores

Beauty is another area where Target is seeking additional growth. The retailer is introducing Target Beauty Studio locations in more than 600 stores as it looks to reinvigorate beauty sales and strengthen the in-store shopping experience.

The initiative adds to broader efforts to refresh Target stores, improve merchandise assortments and give customers more reasons to shop across multiple categories during a single visit.

Target Turnaround Enters a Critical Stage

Target’s latest results suggest its turnaround is gaining traction, particularly in groceries, digital sales and same-day delivery. Stronger revenue and an upgraded full-year outlook provide additional evidence of progress under Fiddelke’s leadership.

The next test will be whether Target can sustain comparable sales growth while improving its apparel and home businesses. Performance during the back-to-school season and the coming months could provide a clearer indication of whether the retailer’s renewed momentum can develop into a durable recovery.
