Our intestines contain millions of bacteria. This is a good thing, because it helps in the digestion of food. Each person has its own ecosystem of intestinal bacteria, with different types and numbers. Is there such a thing as perfect gut flora? This is what Jeroen Reiss, a microbiologist at the University of Leuven, is looking for. He receives stool samples every day for examination. There is one item that definitely does not belong to ideal intestinal bacteria: antibiotics!
