Members of the Bennettsville-Cheraw Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., in collaboration with local community organizations, sponsored an anti-bullying conference recently at Grace Temple Fellowship Church in Wallace.

The workshop provided a forum for participants to share experiences while raising awareness to the different types of bullying and preventions. Concerns of participants and parents were addressed by a panel that included the following; Rippin McLeod, Deputy Superintendent of Marlboro County School District, Debra Peterson, Resource Officer at Marlboro County High School, and Sheriff James E. Clemmons Jr., sheriff of Richmond County, N.C.

Program participants were members of EMBODI (Empowering Males to Build Opportunities for Developing Independence) Program, whose purpose is to expand the horizons of young African American males by cultivating a personal vision for their lives, providing tools to attain a higher quality of life, awareness of various college and career options to make rewarding life choices and decisions, and creating community-minded males by actively involving them in service learning and community service opportunities. The program is a national initiative of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc. whose purpose is to bring together young men, between the ages of (8 - 18) years old from the Marlboro and Cheraw communities with positive men and women who will serve as mentors.

Activities focus on cultural/academic enrichment, building self-confidence, conflict-resolution strategies and issues impacting our youth. The sorority works in collaboration with the Men of Grace Temple Fellowship Church, Theta Phi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., Lambda Iota Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., and Business Empire Group, Raleigh, N.C.

Activities are sponsored monthly to assist participants in attaining future goals of achievement and to explore challenges through discussion and development of strategies for change of action. Previous activities include; trip to the Panthers football game, college tours, fishing trips and adopting a highway.

Committee members are: Dannie Blair, Committee Chair; Lynn Cassidy, Nelvin Ellerbe, Shanika H. David, La’Shawn Palmer, First Vice-President and Program Chair and Karen Clark, Chapter President.
