Flanders Foundation builds data utilities company: Storing citizen data securely | the interior

Flanders will store the data of its citizens in a more secure manner. Today, the Cabinet approved the creation of its own data facilities company. This company will use the Solid standard, which was developed by Tim Berners-Lee (founder of the Internet) together with Flemish experts.

As a neutral party, the data utility company will enable the secure exchange of data between government, businesses and citizens. Moreover, the company must restore the trust of citizens and businesses in sharing data and making data more valuable and findable, according to a report by Flemish Prime Minister Jan Jambon (N-VA). Personal data vaults will ensure that citizens regain control over what happens to their data and can choose who is provided to them.

Also by collaborating with companies, Datanutsbedrijf also wants data to create economic and social added value. There must be “sockets” where “data, like electricity, exits in a modular, reliable, high quality and also privacy compliant manner”. Vlaams Datanutsbedrijf is due to be established in the spring of 2022. The final name will also be announced by then.
