Microsoft hasn’t released Windows 11 yet, but the new operating system is already available in preview for Windows Insiders and testers. This makes Microsoft’s upcoming operating system more vulnerable to hacker attacks and other malware, as it is not the final version with all the security and safety features that Microsoft will provide with Windows 11. Cybercriminals will already take advantage of this. A report from the anti-virus company Kaspersky indicates that cybercriminals are passing malware on to users disguised as a new Microsoft operating system.
In June of this year, Microsoft announced the next version of Windows that will succeed Windows 11. Windows 11 comes as one of the major fixes to the popular operating system for computers from Microsoft. Windows 11 comes with a slew of new features and an overhaul of user interface design and will be rolled out to end users later this year. However, the company has launched a preview version of Windows 11 for developers and those who want to try out the upcoming OS in a pre-release version. Most of the enthusiasts, journalists, and tech developers chose to perform the preview.
Although Microsoft has made downloading and installing Windows 11 fairly easy from its official site, many other sources still see it as a Microsoft site download and software, which often contains malware (not necessarily Windows 11). According to a report from Kaspersky, the most obvious way for cybercriminals to trick users is to put something extra (or something else) there. Example containing an executable called 86307_windows 11 build 21996.1 x64 + activator.exe. With a file size of 1.75GB, it certainly seems reasonable. However, in reality, most of this space consists of a single DLL file that contains a lot of useless information.
Opening the executable will launch the installer, which looks like a regular Windows installation wizard. Its main purpose is to download and run another interesting executable file. The second executable is also the installer and comes with a license agreement (which a few people read) called “Download Manager for 86307_windows 11 build 21996.1 x64 + Activator” noting that it will also install some supported software. If you accept the agreement, a variety of malware will be installed on your computer. Kaspersky said that its products have already defeated hundreds of infection attempts using similar systems associated with Windows 11. A large part of these threats are download programs, the task of which is to download and run other programs. Microsoft recommends only downloading Windows 11 from official sources. So far, Windows 11 is only officially available to participants in the Windows Insider Program.
