In the eastern Philippines, a volcano released a huge cloud of ash on Sunday, forcing many residents in the area to evacuate. Authorities warn of more volcanic eruptions.
The eruption of Bulusan volcano in rural Sorsogon county lasted for 17 minutes and left a cloud of smoke for at least one kilometer. Alarm level scaled to 1 on a scale of 5 in response to ‘slight anxiety’.
The Philippine Institute of Volcanology said the explosion was caused by boiling water under the crater of the volcano. Ash hit two towns in Sorsogon, 500 km south of the capital, Manila. There are no injuries yet. In the municipality of Joban, many citizens, especially the elderly and those with respiratory problems, were evacuated.
Philippine authorities have reminded residents to stay outside a four-kilometre radius of the volcano. People nearby are advised to exercise caution “due to the increased risk of sudden and dangerous eruptions”.
