One in ten Dutch people with basic insurance (11%) have no money for unexpected healthcare costs except for basic coverage.

The healthcare system is inadequate for 11% of the Dutch population

They cannot afford additional coverage, cannot save on additional healthcare costs and do not have reserves to cover additional costs. Nearly a fifth of Dutch people (19%) have difficulty paying for healthcare at all. They indicate that they cannot immediately pay for health care costs that fall within the deductible. This is evidenced by a survey conducted by the online comparison company Pricewise, of 2,000 participants, in collaboration with the independent fieldwork agency Panel Inzicht. Altogether, a quarter of the population of the Netherlands does not have supplemental insurance. Part of this group (40%) choose it because they think it will be cheaper in the long run by paying extra healthcare costs themselves rather than paying an extra monthly premium.

No piggy bank for unexpected healthcare costs

About two-thirds of Dutch people (67%) do not save on costs outside of basic insurance. A large proportion of this group (81%) also do not need to save, as it indicates that they have sufficient reserves to cover unexpected health care costs. “Unfortunately, not every Dutchman is in this situation. About 20% of those who don’t save for extra care also don’t have reserves to cover any costs outside of basic insurance,” says health insurance expert Susan Lovik of PriceWise. “In addition, additional coverage has become more expensive in recent years, so quality care is becoming more and more out of reach for more and more people. There is a risk that people will wander for a long time with relatively minor complaints. This results in much higher healthcare costs when complaints are exacerbated.” For example, when a neglected hole in a molar leads to an expensive root canal treatment or someone does not go to a physiotherapist and therefore has to have surgery. In the past year we have already seen that one in three Dutch people skip healthcare for reduce health care costs.

Supplemental insurance is not always the right choice

A quarter of the Dutch have no additional insurance, in part because they want to get out as cheaply as possible (23%). Another group (37%) believed that they did not need care. 40% think it’s cheaper by paying extra healthcare costs themselves rather than paying a monthly premium for extra insurance. Lovik: In some cases that’s actually the best option, but that’s not always the case. It is always a good idea to calculate the forecast in terms of care needs for the coming year. Do you expect to go to the dentist only once next year? Then it is better to pay for it yourself if you have the financial means. Then you do not need additional insurance. This makes sense, but we still see a lot Better safe than sorryInsured in the Netherlands. And we see this very strongly in dentist coverage, for example, with 37% indicating that they remove this in case they need it.”
