Lazio and Atletico qualified for the eighth round of the Champions League at the expense of Celtic and Feyenoord. At Atletico, Axel Witsel was at centre-back throughout the match.
Nothing was decided in the fifth group before the start of the two matches. Only that Celtic would eventually finish seemed a foregone conclusion. The other three teams were still in the Champions League winter race.
Lazio could only distance itself from Celtic in the final stage. It was 33-year-old Immobile who scored twice for the Italians. Because of this victory, Feyenoord was not allowed to lose to Atletico. Rotterdam got off to a good start, but thanks to an unfortunate goal from Gertruida, Atletico took the lead.
Rotterdam then tried to form a fist, but Witsel and his teammates remained the better team. Just before the hour mark, Hermoso silenced De Kuip with an absolute world-class goal.
Weaver’s equalizer gave the Dutch some hope, but it was short-lived. A few minutes later, one of his teammates beat Bigelow again. Jimenez headed the ball into his own net.
On the final day of play, only the group’s victory is at stake. Feyenoord will play in the Europa League after the new year. Celtic were eliminated from Europe.
