Lefteris, 49, opens Zorba De Griek restaurant near Grote Markt: ‘I already feel at home in this city’

Greek chef Lefteris Tambakou (49 years old) has opened the doors of his new restaurant Zorba De Griek on the Parkstraat in Sint-Niklaas. The man from Athens serves typical Greek cuisine in his own unique style. “I’m sure people will find their way here,” he said.

Lefteris isn’t ready for his test piece and now has 25 years of experience in various Greek restaurants. “I have worked in catering in Brussels for many years and have been running my own business in Dendermonde for the past two years,” says the new manager. “This has always been a dream of mine, but when I saw this building, I was instantly sold. I moved my belongings here and I definitely won’t regret it. I didn’t immediately have any great feelings about the city, but I already feel at home there.”

Friend of the previous owner

The building where the chef and manager is opening his new restaurant has been home to Kavala Restaurant for many years. “The former manager is a good friend of mine, just like Theo Siokos of Acropolis, that other Greek restaurant in town on the corner of Van Dormestraat and Morlandstraat,” says Lefteris. “I am very optimistic at the moment and I believe that this location close to the Grote Markt has many perspectives to offer. I am convinced that the people of Sint-Niklaas will find their way to my business, although at the same time I hope that I will also find enough staff to provide Food, because that is still a sensitive point. My wife and son also help with this work to ensure that we have enough men.

Traditional Greek cuisine

At Zorba De Greek, customers are served traditional Greek cuisine on their plates. The chef, who comes from a village near the Greek capital, says: “The menu is colorful with moussaka, calamari, souvlaki and other traditional dishes in my country.”

“We will also be open in the afternoon for lunch next month, but we will have to wait and see if this will still be possible. The business will be open five days a week, closing on Mondays and Tuesdays only. Feedback after the first evening has been positive It gave me a lot of motivation to make this business a success story.
