As of tomorrow, seven Frenchmen and one Italian are going to trial in Paris for stealing Banksy’s work. In 2019, they stole the metal door of an emergency exit from the Bataclan concert hall in Paris, where the street artist depicted a grieving girl, in honor of the victims of the November 13, 2015 attacks in the Bataclan and elsewhere in Paris.
The court will investigate for exactly three days the role played by the suspects in the theft.
Three masked men arrived at the door on January 26, 2019, shortly after 4 am, armed with grinding wheels. The job was done in less than ten minutes. The investigation led investigators to Italy, where the artwork was found in the attic of an abandoned farmhouse in mid-2020. A month later, on France’s national holiday, Italy returned the work to France.
Who exactly he belongs to, whose value is estimated at 500,000 to 1 million euros, is still a matter of debate. It was handed over to the owners of the Bataclan Building, but the director of the concert hall objected.
