The news was particularly shocking because Downey Jr. is returning in a very different role than expected. The actor won’t be playing Tony Stark, but the villain Doctor Doom.

But it’s possible that Doctor Doom isn’t a new character at all. It’s often happened in comic books that Victor Von Doom and Tony Stark have changed roles and masks.
Avengers: Judgment Day
There’s a possibility that Doctor Doom in Avengers: Doomsday is actually a different version of Tony Stark. This also fits in nicely with the multiverse concept that Marvel is currently fully committed to.
