The European Union invites the Russian ambassador

The European Union summoned the Russian ambassador to express its displeasure over the imposition of sanctions against eight politicians and senior European officials. This was announced by a European Commission spokesman on Monday.

The Russian ambassador is expected to arrive this afternoon at the headquarters of the Secretary General of the European Commission and the European Diplomatic Corps (EEAS). “We will give him a clear condemnation and rejection of this decision,” the spokesman said.

• Russian sanctions on eight European politicians

Russia announced last week that, in response to previous European sanctions, the country imposed a ban on entry for eight Europeans, including Commission Vice President Vera Gorova and David Sassoli, president of the European Parliament.

In a statement, leaders of European institutions described Moscow’s decision as “totally unfounded.”

The European Union will consider its next steps at a foreign ministers’ meeting next week, but it may also invite the Council of Europe, which is a non-EU body and Russia is a member.
