China’s Tingyu Gao won the 500m race at the World Cup Speed Skating in Tomaszow, Poland. He did it with the fastest opening ever (9.32 after 100 metres).

Tingyu Gao shined in the 500m at the opening of the international ski season. Gao won the shortest distance in the World Cup competition in Tomashow, Poland with a fast time of 34.26, a record.
Gao caused quite a stir in pre-season by scoring 33.83 in a training match in his home country, his fourth all-time. This is why so many eyes were on him at the first World Cup of the Olympic season.
The 23-year-old Chinese won a bronze medal at the 2018 Winter Games and has been under the radar for the past year and a half. In Poland it lived up to high expectations. Gao recorded the fastest opening ever with a 9.32 and was 0.28 seconds faster than Tatsuya Shinhama, who finished second.
Canadian world champion Laurent Dubriel finished third with 34.68 points. For Gao, it was the first World Cup win of his career.
