The Volkswagen ID4 can be considered the electric counterpart to the Tiguan, although the electric car now records much better sales numbers than conventionally powered SUVs. So ID4 is very successful. In this article we find out how far 14,000 ID4 drivers can travel on a charged battery.

Volkswagen ID4 drivers can choose from two battery packs. The smallest has a net capacity of 52 kWh, while the largest provides at least 77 kWh of usable energy storage. The version with the small battery is probably one for the museum, because none of the users who left a review on AutoWeek.nl have chosen this version. That's why we're only looking at the 77 kWh variant in this article.

Average power consumption in tests

To determine power consumption, we look at both our own test results and the values ​​that users report in their reviews above. This way we get a fairly complete picture, including the outliers up and down.

In our own testing, we pitted the Volkswagen ID4 against the Toyota bZ4x and Kia e-Niro. Both tests were performed under very different conditions. In best conditions, at temperatures between 15 and 20 degrees Celsius, the ID4 consumes an average of 16.8 kWh per 100 kilometres. This represents a maximum driving range of 458 km. In low temperatures and rain, the Volkswagen performed considerably less well. Consumption increased to an average of 22.3 kWh/100 km, resulting in range dropping like candy to a maximum of 345 km.

Consumption and range of ID4 drivers

If we take the average consumption of 12 ID4 drivers, including our own test data, we arrive at an average energy consumption of 19.3 kWh/100 km. In fact, but slightly lower than the average result of the two tests.

The explanation is clear: users also report that the difference between hot and cold has a significant impact on driving range. “It is striking that you have to make big sacrifices when the temperature is below 10 degrees and in autumn weather,” wrote an ID4 1st Max driver who received his car in such conditions. “Count on 300-350 kilometres. I still have the summer left,” he writes.

Another user, with 150,000 kilometers of experience using his ID4, explains what consumption can look like in the summer months. “I currently achieve 20.5kWh/100km on winter tires and at low temperatures. In summer, I regularly achieve 16kWh/100km on trips of around 150km, 90% of which are motorways. This represents a maximum range of 376km in winter compared to 481 kilometers in summer. On average, ID4 drivers get 398 kilometers from their 77 kWh battery.
