Vice President Harris promises to come to US southern border after criticism | Abroad

Instead of going to the border, Republicans criticized Harris for going to the interior of Mexico and Guatemala during his first international trip. When he finally got to the border, Harris did not explain when the next visit would be.

U.S. President Joe Biden has asked Harris to tackle illegal immigration along the U.S. southern border. The vice president says he is mainly focused on addressing the root causes of immigration.

Several Republicans invited the vice president to cross the border for his first international trip. Illegal migration to the southern border of the United States has recently reached its highest level in 20 years and requires urgent assistance.

The vice president defended his desire to go home, saying he wanted to tackle the source of the migration problems. “You can’t say you care about the border if you don’t care about the root causes,” Harris said.

White House Press Secretary Jen Zaki stressed on Tuesday that Harris’ job was to target Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras. “His job is to work with these countries and their leaders to address the root causes, to combat corruption and to address humanitarian concerns,” Sackie told the White House. “We did not take the advice of former President Trump or most of the Republicans who criticize us for this.”
