Oil spill off the coast of California | Abroad

An oil spill of an area of 34 square kilometers occurred off the coast of the US state of California. Authorities are trying to contain the spill, but the environmental damage is already extensive. It is believed to be a pipeline rupture.

“The oil spill will have irreversible effects on the environment,” said Katrina Foley, a local official. Many dead fish and birds have already been found on the coast. The community worst affected, Huntington Beach, south of Los Angeles, had to cancel the last day of the air show, the Pacific Air Show.

According to Foley, the source of the leak, which the city estimates at 480,000 liters, has not yet been determined with certainty. It is believed to have leaked from a pipeline five miles off the coast. An initial analysis of the oil showed it to be crude.”

Huntington Beach warned of the oil poisoning and asked residents to stay away from affected areas, avoid the beach and not swim. City services are currently working hard to contain the oil.
